The engineer will train and guide the testers until they can understand all steps and operate independently.

What is PCB Assembly (PCBA)?

Steps Involved in PCB Assembly

Solder Paste Applicaiton

The foremost step is to apply a thin layer of solder paste to the board. During this process, a stencil is placed over the PCB. It then ensures the paste is applied only to the pads where the components will be placed. 

This paste is a kind of powdered metal, mostly tin, that is mixed with the flux and helps with the soldering process.

Pick and Place

After manufacturer apply the solder paste, the PCB moves into the pick-and-place machine. During this compoenenet placement, method, and accuracy plays a crucial role. Thus, an SMT components are positioned accurately in the PCB with the help of roboti/automatic machine. 

Reflow Soldering

After placing the components on the circuit board, the PCB is transferred to the reflow oven. The oven heats the board to melt the solder paste, which forms a solder joint between the components and the board.

Inspection

After the reflow soldering, the PCB undergoes various inspection systems. Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) and X-ray inspection (AXI) are used during this process. They usually help to identify misaligned components, soldering defects, and bridging between the solder joints. 

Through-Hole Insertion

If the board requires through-hole components, these are inserted manually or by an automated machine. Unlike SMT components, these require soldering at the bottom of the PCB.

For these through-hole components, the boards go through the wave soldering machine. A wave of molten solder touches the bottom of the board. This will solder the through-hole pins to the board.
